* The BWClub SUNDAY RAINY DAY MUD HIKE is to WOHLER BEACH & MEADOW on the beautiful RUSSIAN RIVER; FREE; MEET RJ in the PARKING LOT from 11-1115am; here are DIRECTIONS TO WOHLER (and a MAP LINK follows below that): Take Highway 101 North past Petaluma, Rohnert Park, and Santa Rosa. In north Santa Rosa you'll pass exits to Steele Lane, Bicentennial Avenue, and Old Redwood Highway...drive on to the next exit, just past the huge Luther Burbank Center on the right (east) side of the freeway. Take that exit, which is labeled "River Road / Guerneville / Mark West Rd", and bear left off the freeway, turning left (west) at the light and going over the freeway. Continue on past the winery on the left, PG&E substation on the right, through the stoplight at the intersection of Fulton Road, and on for a few miles (about 7 miles), with small, rolling hills on your left and vineyards on your right, past Laughlin, Slusser, and Laguna/Trenton-Healdsburg, and then turn right (north) on Wohler Rd. (If you pass Covey, the Spears Market sign, Mirabel, and/or canoe rentals and campgrounds, you've gone too far.) Follow Wohler over a creek bridge, to the right, and to the left. You'll see the Radford Inn bed & breakfast on the hillside to the north of the intersection at Eastside Road, which leads to Healdsburg...don't take that...continue straight on Wohler as it winds up the hill, past houses, past the old cyclone-fenced beach parking area to the left, and finally to the green steel gate at the east end of Wohler Bridge. Follow Wohler as it turns left past the gate and over Wohler Bridge and the beautiful Russian River. At the other end of the bridge there is a county pay parking lot. Follow the directions by putting $3 (Or is it $4? Use paper dollars - no coins.) in one of the envelopes, sealing it, and depositing it in the slot. ***MEET RJ, bald, bearded leather daddy from 11-1115am, and we'll walk back over Wohler Bridge, and turn left and hop over the green steel gate... it's a 15 minute walk to the beach. We'll follow the paved trail past the Water Agency corp yard, and the dirt road down to the left of the cyclone fence and into the forest. At the end of the forest there is a fork in the trail... the LEFT turn, marked on the sign as "POND / RIVER", is the WRONG way... do NOT go LEFT. We'll continue straight (veer right) directly into the meadow toward where the sign says "BEACH", and on the trail through the meadow and follow the trail straight into the bushes. That end of the meadow would be spotted with naked men cruising (on warm days)... the trail goes through a short forest and dead ends at Wohler Beach on the Russian River! Later we'll hike across the meadow, through the forest, along the cliff, and up along the Jurassic creek. BWClub.net
